VINTAGEA CHARMING RACCOON PRINT
Fern Bisel Peat, a well-known twentieth century author & illustrator of children's books and magazines. Born in Erie, Pennsylvania in 1893, Peat went on to attend Ohio Wesleyan University. Not only was she an accomplished author and illustrator in her own right, but together with her husband she founded and ran a successful interior decorating studio specializing in designing children’s rooms, murals, textiles and wallpaper. She also designed several children’s wards, hospitals and orphanages.
During the early years of the twentieth century there was an unprecedented demand for magazine and book illustrations. Along with Fern Bisel Peat several talented female artists stood out in an industry dominated by male artists including Mabel Lucie Attwell, Kate Greenaway and Beatrix Potter. During the 1940’s Peat, as art director for Children’s Playmate magazine, not only illustrated most of the magazine’s covers but created the paper dolls, paper toys & story illustrations that the magazine became known for. Many of the illustrations she created for A Child’s Garden of Verses published in 1940 including Lot 231 ‘Rain’ are up for auction. Also included at auction is Lot 218 ‘The Runaway Toys’, the cover illustration for The Runaway Toys Wish You a Merry Christmas, published to great acclaim in 1932. Lot 227 is one of Peat’s original cover illustrations for Eugene Field’s story of ‘The Sugar-Plum Tree’.
