Why are modified OEM parts a good idea?
Yes, the filter traps the metal in your DR650 engine oil. But for the filter to trap the metal in the oil, the oil has to get to the filter by way of the oil pump. Dirt and sludge in the oil doesn't do your oil pump any favors but the metal in the oil causes a lot of wear in the oil pump. Having magnets in the oil sump traps the metal particles that are in abundance in an engine where the transmission, clutch, and engine share the same oil. The magnets trap and hold the metal particles and protect the vital oil pump. Magnetic filtration if you will. The magnetic filtration system needs to be serviced like any filtration system does. So a handy place to place the magnets is in the drain plugs. When you drain the oil, a quick wipe of the magnet with a rag and the magnet filtration system is clean and ready to protect the oil pump from harmful metal particles till the next oil change.
Just remember that the engine, transmission, and clutch all use the same oil. As the engine parts wear, especially the cam chain and sprockets, the transmission gears clash, and the clutch does it's thing metal is deposited into the oil. This is normal. Every time you remove these plugs there will be some metal debris on them. That's their job, to catch the metal before it gets into the oil pump.
