Description
WONDERFUL EXAMPLE!Handmade Bedfordshire guipure style bobbin lace from mid 1800s. Outstanding picot edging.
This lappet appears to have been homemade as the ends seem to have been formed simply by stitching/gathering. Given the era of this piece I think of Civil War widows who many times had to "make do" with what they had (not an easy time).
There are two old repairs across the width toward the neck edge and a few spots of broken brides and loose threads. Overall most of the length is, however, in very good condition.
MEASURES: 43 inches long and 3-1/4 inches wide.
One nice source says: "Length of the lappets depended on how the head was dressed, including the height of any wig, the placement of a cap, and where the streamers were attached. They might be folded on the top of the head, or stream down the back from the head anywhere from shoulder to waist." Very popular for most of the 18th and 19th centuries! Great re-enacting accessory!
Acquired in a true Victorian/Edwardian estate and guaranteed of the period. For your reference please see the last picture of watered silk ribbon found in with other textiles and wound on part of a 1873 bank advertising card. Additionally (sold last year), were writing paper backed crazy quilt squares that showed dates in the 1860's. Many pieces of sterling silver flatware bore engraving dates in the 1850's. This family lived in the Cincinnati area from about 1850-1925.
All of our antique fabrics are unlaundered.
