Sovereign coin backed by the British government.
It is now known, and has been officially verified by the Royal Mint, that this 'mule error' coin was struck in the production of a batch of Britannia's destined for the bullion market sometime between November & December 2013.
It is the Obverse (Head side) that makes the coin a mule coin. A 1oz Silver Britannia Obverse design should contain a castellated pattern round the inside edge of this side of the coin, as it does on the Reverse (Tails) side. However, with the release of the new UK Lunar £2 silver coin, new dies were produced for the obverse of that coin that although very similar to the obverse of the Britannia Obverse do not have the pattern round the inside edge ie. the inside edge is plain. Somehow during the striking of the batch of Britannia coins, the dies for the Obverse of the UK Lunar coin were used on this particular batch of Britannia's, thus turning them into a mule coin.
This is a 'MULE ERROR' coin that was produced by the Royal Mint.
The 'MULE' coin has the original Philip Nathan Britannia Reverse design, but with the New UK Lunar Coin Obverse.
Numbers of the 'mule' coin have been officially verified by the Royal Mint at 17,000 pieces ONLY.
