Railroad tool??
I saved this awesome tool from salvage melt down in Amarillo Texas.
I will consider offers on this item!
This is one amazing tool. Likely from the 1930s or 1940s at the latest (could even be older), this wrench is a wonder of "home-made" ironwork.
It still has remnants of red paint that once apparently covered the entire wrench. Shows a lot of use ---> has a GREAT patina.
By the way, hex nuts were first introduced in the 1880's.... they were punched out of flat stock. (an eBayer wrote to me and asked this question)
Another person notes that "
In Ian Hogg's book "Weapons of the Civil War" there is a photograph captioned
'Union 13-inch Siege Mortars, outside Yorktown in April 1862'.
In it one can clearly see the carriages are assembled with hex nuts (and square head bolts).
Square nuts were used also, some are visible holding the straps down over the trunnions."
The primitive nature of the manufacture of this tool makes me wonder at just how old it really is! I'm thinking 1930s or 1940s.
This wrench would make a great centerpiece and conversation starter for any collection!
I hate to sell it, but need the cash to pay tuition bill.
