1915 Rare GERMANY World War I Broadside SHOE MAKING National Women's Service NFD

Description

Rare original antique broadside/leaflet, "Schuhfürsorge des Nationalen Frauendienst" [Shoe Care of the National Women's Service], issued by the Nationalen Frauendienst (NFD) and printed by Jacob & Alfred Mayer, Frankfurt, Germany, circa 1915, printed on newsprint measuring 8-1/2" x 8-1/4". Light toning; two punch holes to left margin (not affecting any text); two light creases with discreet archival reinforcement to reverse; otherwise clean and fine. An attractive, well-preserved copy of this very scarce and fragile ephemeral item.
German women's homefront efforts during World War I.
Germany's National Women's Service, founded in 1914, spearheaded much of the homefront effort in Germany in World War I, promoting the same kind of austerity, self-sufficiency, and morale-building that characterized similar efforts by the Allies elsewhere in Europe and in the United States. The present item advertises a series of classes for women on do-it-yourself footwear made from waste and scrap material, as suggested by the illustration at top, which somewhat humorously presents an array of shoes suspended from a line as woman busies herself with another pair at a nearby worktable. The lower portion advertises similar sessions for shoe repair.
Rare and quite possibly a unique survival; I was unable to locate a single other example.
